Movie review: Loving Vincent

Image
Vincent van Gogh's style, classified as Post-Impressionism, is characterized by bold, expressive brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and a strong sense of emotion and symbolism. He utilized thick, impasto application of paint, creating a textured surface, and often employed swirling, dynamic lines to convey movement and energy. His work is deeply personal, reflecting his subjective experiences and emotions through his unique artistic language .

Aamis (2019): A Poetic Review of the Macabre.

Image
"Aamis" unfolds with an elegance that both mesmerizes and disturbs. This Assamese film, directed by Bhaskar Hazarika, is a delicate dance of emotions, a haunting exploration of forbidden desires that leaves an indelible mark on the soul. From the very first scene, "Aamis" captivates with its serene beauty. The film tells the story of Nirmali, a middle-aged pediatrician, and Sumon, a young Ph.D. student with a passion for food. Their worlds collide in a meeting that seems innocent yet tinged with an unspoken intensity. The film delicately crafts their connection through shared culinary experiences, each dish a symbol of their deepening bond. As the narrative progresses, "Aamis" gently draws viewers into a labyrinth of emotions. There is a palpable innocence in Nirmali and Sumon's initial interactions, a sense of discovery and wonder that is almost childlike. Yet, beneath this veneer of innocence lies a growing tension, an undercurrent of something darke...

Places I want to go with you

Some day when we are older, I want to travel to northern Italy with you and I want to visit all the places you have dreamt to visit. Specially I will try to search the city of Créma and the pond by which the boys spent their summer in 'Call me by your name'. I also want to visit France, eat cheese and drink quality wine, and read French poetry , and travel in French Ferries on the river Seine. We will go to Paris and visit the Shakespeare book store where Jesse met Celine for the second time in his life. I wish we can spend an evening like them. I wish we can order une citrone in the cafe at the corner. I want to to visit Amsterdam and see the Anne Frank museum with you. I want to climb the steep stairs and be breathless on reaching the secret book shelf. I wish we can eat dragon carrot risotto at Oranje by the riverbank, while dried Petals of cherry blossom float like confetti on the river water. You know what else would I love to do? I would love to fly to Banaras and tak...

Et tu, Brute?

Cute kid came for an injection today. 10 month old, very playful, smiling like an angel. " Gunjan " her mother filled in when I asked the name. " Hello Gunjan !" Her eyes lit up listening to her own name. We had a good start. Waved to my Hello, she took the rattle I gave to her for playing, trying to bite the bright colored plastic toy like all the kids of her age do. She sat in her mother's lap while I jotted notes in her file. " She has learnt to sit up, crawls on the floor ", Her mom was proud to tell me. 'She speaks Baba only' I nod. ' Milestones WNL' ,my pen scribbles automatically. "Put her on the table, please." I order her mother. Small village woman. She follows. "Hey, Golu!!!" I chimed my favourite practiced phrase, waving a stuffed teddybear in her face. I let her grab it. Two tiny hands, hold the toy far less cute than herself. As I put my stetho, I keep the eye cont...

Happy Birthday Anne Frank!

Image
Anne Frank is an inspiration for youth all the world across. Her story is full of courage and Hope. Her diary which she wrote at the tender age of 13-15 years is very famous example of young adult literature, and has been translated into all major languages. On her 89th Birthday , I decided to compile the best quotes of Anne Frank . Feel free to copy and paste them on your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter , (and if you are feeling nerdy- jot down in your notebook as well !) Whoever is happy will make others happy too. Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy. Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart. The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be. Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know...

Book review "In Other Words" by Jhumpa Lahiri

Image
“What does a word mean? And a life? in the end, it seems to me, the same thing. Just as a word can have many dimensions, many nuances, great complexity, so, too, can a person, a life. Language is the mirror, the principal metaphor. Because ultimately the meaning of a word, like that of a person is boundless, ineffable.” – Jhumpa Lahiri In Other Words An award winning novelist of English language wants to travel the uncharted sea of mastering a foreign language.  Jhumpa Lahiri  in her latest (and Non-fiction debut) shares her experiences in learning Italian. With a series of metaphors this creator of The Interpreter of Maladies describes how learning Italian has been her long standing wish come true. In these 203 pages, she tells us the story of her metamorphosis from an  American Born Bengali Indian  to an Established Italian Author. She describes in detail how the seed of the desire to learn Italian was sowed, and how many struggles she had to go thr...

A thought experiment

Try to think about this woman—poor, illiterate, beaten by her drunkard husband, stranded by her family in the last month of her pregnancy. Delivering a Babyboy at a hospital in Sabarmati at 10 in the night, taking a Rikshaw (*Alone*) to take him to CHA because he didn't cry after birth. Her only ray of hope in this whole wide world is battling between injections, and Intracaths, and oxygen hose, and Ryle’s tubes, and ventilators and sensors and tangles of lines of iv fluids. Struggling to stretch every ounce of its existence to keep the tiny heart beating. Against failing kidneys and seizuring brains. And loads of ischemic insult, The tiny creature labours to breath. She—tired and sore—both from the unfairness of the world and the pricking episiotomy stitches. Broken by the toughest of contractions, lays awake, on the stony cold bench outside the nursery, not able to get up and quench her thirst without the pain ripping her apart into bits and pieces. Bright light, ...

Movie review: Queen of Katwe: a moving tale of hope and perseverence

Image
QUEEN OF KATWE (2016) “In chess, the small one can become the big one. That’s why I like it.” Directed by the talented Mira Nair famous for "The Namesake", "Salaam Bombay!" and "Monsoon Wedding", "Queen of Katwe" is a moving tale of how hard work and determination can literally bring a person from lives of struggle to life of glory. Just Like the  Phenomenon called "Promoting"  in the game of Chess, in which the Pawn, if it can reach to the last row of the opposite side of the board can be promoted to the rank of Queen. Phiona Mutesi, who calls this manoeuvre "Queening" is in full rights to attain this honour. The film features the story of a 10 year girl living in the slums of Katwe, Kampala, Uganda, who while selling Maize on the streets to support her family starts taking an interest in chess, and with her guide Robert Katende's strong determination beats all odds to become the youngest international chess cha...

Zubaan-film review

Image
Yesterday, I watched the film " Zubaan " (ઝુબાં ). It was so good, so well promoted, {insert sarcasm here} that there was a #Crowd Of TOTAL 8 people in the hall ! The whole of the audience fit into a single elevator on the way out. While entering into the cinema, we bumped into an acquaintance who asked what movie we were watching, hearing our reply, she said with amusement: " Zubaan ? આ ક્યુ મુવી છે, એનું તો ક્યાંય પોસ્ટર પણ દેખાતું નથી!" We laughed at her, but once in the theatre, halfway through the film, we realized who had the last laugh.

Masaan - review

Image
From the Ghaats of the holy Ganga comes an astonishingly beautiful and bold gem of a movie -- Masaan. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, and presented by Drishyam films, this movie has already won the hearts of serious movie connoisseurs in Cannes and in Ahmedabad. Set in the picturesque town of Varanasi, this film-- as it has proclaimed in the trailer itself-- ' Celebrates Life, Death and Everything in between.' Its not a single story. Its a unification of two stories, saperate on the surface, but joined by a common thread -- Banares. Two rivers, formed by rivulets of myriad instances flowing parallel, merging -metaphorically so- at the Sangam. Devi, who is caught between anger, guilt, and shame after her encounter with her boyfriend in a hotel room turns awry when they are busted by a corrupt policeman threatening to defame the couple, and the boy, in an attempt to save the humiliation, com...
